In 1993, the 101st IOC Session (General Meeting) specified that Traditional Karate is the discipline which is practiced by the ITKF and governed by its rules. At this time "Traditional Karate" was differentiated from other "karate" disciplines. Therefore, that form of karate which is practiced and governed by the rules and regulations of the ITKF is the only officially recognized "Traditional Karate" much the same way that IOC recognized swimming as practiced under international swimming rules is distinguished from general forms of swimming.

United World Karate Championship Returns to Koper – Historic Agreement Reached for 2026

The International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF) and the International Karate Union (IKU) have officially reached an agreement to organize the 2nd United World Karate Championship in traditional and modern karate. The event will take place from October 22 to 25, 2026, in Koper, Slovenia, at the prestigious Bonifika Sports Arena.

This championship marks the continuation of a historic legacy initiated in 2015, when the first-ever United World Karate Championship was successfully held in the very same Bonifika Arena in Koper, leaving a powerful global impact and setting a milestone for unity within the karate world.

The agreement was finalized during today’s high-level meeting in Szczecin, Poland, between Dr. Riccardo Mosco, General Secretary of IKU, and Dr. Dejan Nedev, President of ITKF. This renewed collaboration reaffirmed the shared vision, solidarity, and global development strategy of the traditional and modern karate community.

The competition will be held under the official ITKF and IKU rules, gathering top national teams, world champions, and elite karate athletes from all continents. A spectacular and globally visible event is expected, with record participation and international attendance.

ITKF AWARDS HIGH KARATE RANKS

At today’s online meeting of the ITKF Shihan Kai Committee, a unanimous decision was made to award higher karate ranks to distinguished members of the ITKF.

International Honorees:
• Katsuya Ishiyama (Venezuela) – 10th Dan
• Dr. Vencislav Nedev (Macedonia) – 10th Dan
• Chris Mance (South Africa) – 9th Dan
• Miguel Vega (Peru) – 9th Dan
• Dr. Dejan Nedev (Macedonia) – 7th Dan
• Dr. Aljosa Nedev (Macedonia) – 7th Dan

All recipients are renowned karate practitioners, instructors, coaches, and athletes who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of ITKF and traditional karate worldwide.

The official awarding of certificates will take place next year during the ITKF World Championship in Slovenia.
